The Devil Wears Prada

Watch

The Devil Wears Prada formed in Dayton, Ohio, in 2005 and plays metalcore. The name comes from the novel, not the film, which came out after the band started. They picked it because they thought the book had an anti-materialist message. It turned out it didn't, but they kept the name anyway and gave it their own meaning: God won't judge people by what they own.

Rise Records and Plagues

All the founding members were Christians, and the early songs carried that theme. After a 2005 demo, Patterns of a Horizon, Rise Records signed them. They re-recorded the demo songs for their debut, Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord. They made it with Joey Sturgis in Connersville, Indiana, and it came out on 22 August 2006. That summer they also played the Cornerstone Festival.

Plagues followed on 21 August 2007 and peaked at No. 57 on the Billboard 200. It had two singles, "HTML Rulez D00d" and "Hey John, What's Your Name Again?" Both got videos that aired on MTV and Fuse. Around then, the band named Underoath and Still Remains as their main influences.

Ferret and the top 10

With Roots Above and Branches Below (2009) reached No. 11, and Alternative Press readers voted them Band of the Year for 2009. The Zombie EP came out in 2010. Then Dead Throne arrived on Ferret Music on 13 September 2011. Its big theme was anti-idolatry. It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and topped both the Christian and Independent album charts. 8:18 followed in 2013.

After that the lineup kept shifting. Keyboardist James Baney left in 2012, founding guitarist Chris Rubey in 2015 and drummer Daniel Williams in 2016. The band went back to Rise for Transit Blues (2016), then joined Solid State Records in 2018. They released The Act (2019), Color Decay (2022) and Flowers (2025). Williams died in a private plane crash in San Diego on 22 May 2025.

Where the faith went

The Devil Wears Prada used to be known as a Christian metalcore band. Not anymore. Guitarist Kyle Sipress said in 2021 that "we have not promoted the band a [sic] being Christian for a looong time. Most of us aren't Christians, but we do aim at writing music that is fun to play!"

Keyboards and breakdowns

They were one of the first big metalcore bands of the 2000s to bring electronics into the music, with keyboards running under the screams and breakdowns. Loudwire noted they also got called "myspace-core," thanks to their following among the scene kids of Myspace. They've named Underoath, Norma Jean and As I Lay Dying among their influences.
