Atlus has put out a new trailer for Persona 4 Revival, its remake of the much-loved 2008 role-playing game, and it's called the Shadow trailer. The English cut went up on the Official ATLUS West YouTube channel at about 3.30pm on Saturday, 3 October, Adelaide time. That was still late Friday night in California. The launch dates haven't moved. It's out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC on 18 February 2027, it's on Game Pass from that day, and the Nintendo Switch 2 version follows three months later on 20 May.

What the trailer's selling

Gematsu's Sal Romano and RPG Site's Mikhail Madnani both wrote it up on 3 October. Gematsu quoted Atlus's video description, and it opens like this: "A string of unusual murders disturbs the peace in the quiet town of Inaba as word of the mysterious Midnight Channel begins to spread."

It goes on: "Attempting to piece together the link between these mysteries, the protagonist and his classmates come face-to-face with dangerous Shadows," which it calls "manifestations of one's other self." Then the sign-off: "Awaken the power of Personas together and uncover the truth within the fog when Persona 4 Revival launches."

That's the whole pitch in a few lines. Murders, a strange TV channel, Shadows and fog. If you've never played Persona 4, it's a fair way in. If you have, it tells you Atlus is keeping the same mystery, not swapping Inaba for something new.

The Shadow name isn't random, either. In Persona 4, Shadows are the hidden, pushed-down parts of people. Facing yours is how a character wakes up a Persona, the power they fight with.

RPG Site said the trailer shows new music and gameplay ahead of the February release. It didn't name a song, so we won't either. Gematsu and RPG Site both posted the English and Japanese versions. The one on this page is the English cut from Official ATLUS West.

This isn't a cast reveal. Earlier trailers already covered the characters one by one, including Yukiko, Yosuke, Chie, Kanji, Teddie, Naoto, Rise and the protagonist. RPG Site links to all of them, along with a story trailer.

The dates, platform by platform

18 February 2027 is launch day for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Gematsu lists Steam and the Microsoft Store as the PC shops. SEGA, which owns Atlus, made the February date official in an English release on 8 June 2026. It named Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 5 and Steam, and it opened pre-orders on the Microsoft Store that day.

20 May 2027 is the Switch 2 date. That one came later. Gematsu reported it on 9 September 2026, and Atlus's Japanese site, p4re.jp, lists 2027.02.18 for the first wave and 2027.05.20 for Switch 2. So if you're on Switch 2, you're waiting until May, not February.

Game Pass is in the plan from day one on the February platforms. SEGA's June release lists it alongside the consoles, and Gematsu repeated it in both its September and October stories. What nobody's said yet is which editions or extras Game Pass covers.

What it costs in Japan

SEGA's June release only gave Japanese prices, all including tax. The Standard Edition, physical or digital, is 9,900 yen. The Digital Deluxe Edition is 11,880 yen and the Digital Premium Edition is 13,640 yen. The digital tiers add costume sets, plus Persona and music packs.

Then there's the physical LIMITED BOX at 18,480 yen. It comes with a Shigenori Soejima designer box, a Midnight Channel phone pouch, an exclusive T-shirt, a 48-page artbook, a Velvet Costumes set and the physical game. SEGA's release also says only the PS5 version is getting physical copies.

Australian, US and European prices haven't been set out yet, and converting the yen doesn't give you an official figure.

The Japanese site also lists a pre-order bonus for anyone who buys by 23:59 on 17 February 2027, Japan time. That's 1.29am on 18 February in Adelaide. It's a Japanese store cutoff, though, so check your own store before counting on it.

Why it's called Revival

SEGA calls it a remake of Persona 4 Golden, with better graphics, menus, combat and cutscenes, all "reimagined through a modern lens." It says there are quality-of-life changes and a lot of added content, and that it's meant for both new and returning players. It's being made by Atlus's P-Studio. SEGA's release lists subtitles in a long run of languages and voices in Japanese and English. Japan's ratings board, CERO, has given it a B.

Atlus has done this before. Persona 3 Reload came out on 2 February 2024 as a full remake of Persona 3 for current consoles. It kept the story and rebuilt the look and the systems. Revival is the same idea for Persona 4. Atlus hasn't published a full list of what's changed, though, so don't assume every Reload change carries over.

It's not just another port, either. The original Persona 4 came out on PlayStation 2 in Japan on 10 July 2008, then in North America on 9 December 2008, Australia on 12 March 2009 and Europe on 13 March 2009. Persona 4 Golden, the expanded version, hit the PlayStation Vita in Japan on 14 June 2012 and North America on 20 November 2012, with Australia and Europe following in February 2013.

Golden reached Windows PCs on 13 June 2020, then Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S together on 19 January 2023. Atlus said in 2021 that Golden had sold about 2.5 million copies across Vita and PC. Revival is a rebuild from the ground up, not Golden moved onto new hardware again.

The cast has kept turning up in spin-offs too. There's the fighting game Persona 4 Arena from Arc System Works in 2012, its follow-up Arena Ultimax, the rhythm game Persona 4: Dancing All Night, and the dungeon crawlers Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth and Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth.

What Inaba is

Persona 4 is a small-town murder mystery. A city kid moves to rural Inaba for a year. There's fog, rain and a rumour about a TV channel that only shows up at midnight. Then bodies start turning up in places they shouldn't be. The friends find they can climb through TV screens into another world, where they fight Shadows. School, friendships, part-time jobs and dungeons all run on the same calendar.

Director Katsura Hashino said the murder plot was there to give players a clear goal after Persona 3. The town was based on one on the outskirts of Mount Fuji, and it was meant to be a "nowhere" place, not a tourist spot. Soejima's character designs are still the face of the series. Composer Shoji Meguro's score, with vocals by Shihoko Hirata on key songs, is what fans hum.

Atlus's own feature list, quoted by Gematsu in September, covers a year at Yasogami High with classes, clubs, romance and part-time jobs. There are murder investigations tied to the Midnight Channel rumour. Fights are turn-based, and you hit enemies' elemental weak spots to knock them down for an All-Out Attack. Social Links let you build bonds with people in town, and Inaba gets revamped modern graphics. That's Atlus describing its own game, not a review.

Persona 6 and 30 million

SEGA's June release also marked the Persona series passing 30 million sales worldwide, with a new illustration by Soejima. It said Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6 were "on the horizon" as the series turns 30. That's not a Persona 6 date. SEGA hasn't given one.

The wider release calendar

Lots of big games are working through the same long wait. Nintendo gave The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 a November 2026 date, as we reported in they gave Ocarina a November date. Square Enix is bringing Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II to Switch 2. Rockstar opened pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI. And Sony is bringing QSSR AI upscaling to the standard PS5.

With launch about four and a half months away, expect more trailers before February. Switch 2 news should pick up as May gets closer. If you're on PS5, Xbox or PC, the Shadow trailer is a taste of the mood on a date you already had. If you're on Switch 2, you've got a longer wait.

You can read the details in Gematsu's Shadow trailer story, RPG Site's write-up, SEGA's 8 June release and Gematsu's Switch 2 story. The dates haven't moved.
