Kutless is a Portland, Oregon, Christian rock group that formed in 1999. It began as a campus worship band called Call Box, playing at Warner Pacific College during the 1999–2000 school year. In October 2001 they took the name Kutless from Romans 6:23. The way they read it, Jesus took the wounds of sin for them and left them "Kutless." Singer Jon Micah Sumrall has fronted the band from the start, and they've sold more than 3 million records worldwide.

BEC and Sea of Faces

Kutless put out its self-titled debut on BEC Recordings in 2002, with "Your Touch" and "Run" as the first singles. In 2003 the band went on its first tour, opening for Audio Adrenaline and MercyMe.

Sea of Faces (2004) reached No. 97 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 250,000 copies. That earned the band its first headlining tour.

Turning to worship

Strong Tower (2005) was their first worship album, and Hearts of the Innocent (2006) got to No. 45. To Know That You're Alive (2008) topped Billboard's Christian Albums chart. "What Faith Can Do," from the worship album It Is Well (2009), became their first chart-topper on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs and held the spot for eight weeks. Believer (2012) debuted at No. 36 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on Christian Albums.

The lineup changed several times, and Sumrall ended up the only original member. In 2022 the band marked twenty years since its debut with the TWENTY EP, and the single "Words of Fire" was a return to hard rock. "End of the World," made with Disciple, came next, and The Seventh Seal EP came out in June 2025.

A worship band at heart

Kutless started as a worship band and never wandered far from it. Their name comes from a Bible verse, and they've made several worship albums. They toured with Casting Crowns, played Winter Jam with Newsboys and Red, and teamed up with Compassion International on the Believer Tour.

Touring partners

Kutless began as a hard rock band on BEC and moved steadily toward melodic worship. They toured with Thousand Foot Krutch on the Sea of Faces tour in 2004 and took Disciple out on the Hearts of the Innocent tour.
