Adelaide isn't the first city most people name when they think of extreme metal. Truth Corroded have spent nearly three decades making the case that it should be.

Adelaide, 1997

Truth Corroded formed in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1997. They play thrash and death metal with a political edge, and the band describe their music as confronting and vicious, with political, religious and social commentary carried through their lyrics, themes and imagery. Their influences, by their own account, include Slayer, Obituary, Sepultura and Exhorder.

Early records

The band put out a demo in 1997, then the Fuel the Chain EP in 1999 and the End EP in 2001. They also turned up on national radio compilations: "Remove the Face" appeared on triple j's Full Metal Racket in 2000, and "Insurrect" on Full Metal Racket 2 in 2002.

Their first album, Begin, came out in November 2001. Our Enemy Is the Weapon followed in August 2005. It was recorded at John Reynolds Studios in South Australia between June and September 2004, produced by the band with Matt Hills, and mastered by Alan Douches in New Jersey. The lineup was Jason North on vocals, Mark Lennard and Corey Grieve on guitars, Greg Shaw on bass and Matt Barnett on drums.

Worship the Bled followed in 2011 and The Saviours Slain in 2013. "They Are Horror" appeared on AFM Records' All For Metal IV compilation in 2014.

Bloodlands

In 2018 Truth Corroded signed with Unique Leader Records. "For Truth Corroded this has been the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance," bassist Greg Shaw said.

Bloodlands came out on March 22, 2019. Kevin Talley, known for Suffocation and Dying Fetus, played drums, and Zeuss mixed and mastered it. The guest list is remarkable for an Adelaide band: Stephen Carpenter of Deftones on the closing "I Once Breathed," Terrance Hobbs of Suffocation on "To the Carnal Earth," Ryan Knight on the title track, and Mark Kloeppel of Misery Index.

"Victims Left Lepers" and "Open Eyes and Willing Hands" both got official videos through the label.

Still an Adelaide band

Truth Corroded are proof that a band can stay rooted in this city and still end up on a worldwide extreme metal label with guests from some of the genre's biggest names. They've done it the slow way, across more than two decades of records.

Where to start

Start with "Victims Left Lepers" from Bloodlands, then go back to "Pride of Demise."
