Watch
Limp Bizkit are one of the most successful nu metal bands of all time, and one of the most argued about.
Jacksonville, 1994
Fred Durst and Sam Rivers formed Limp Bizkit in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1994. Rivers brought in drummer John Otto, and guitarist Wes Borland followed. The lineup now is Durst on vocals, Otto on drums, Borland on guitar and DJ Lethal on turntables. Borland's sonic experiments and Durst's angry delivery became the band's signatures.
The band built a following in Jacksonville's underground scene, then signed with Flip Records, distributed by Interscope, which released Three Dollar Bill, Y'all in 1997.
The peak
Significant Other (1999) and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water (2000) made them huge. The singles "Nookie," "Re-Arranged," "Break Stuff," "Take a Look Around," "Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle)," "My Generation," "My Way," "Eat You Alive" and their cover of the Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" all reached the top 20 of the US Alternative Airplay chart.
That success also brought controversy, over their performances at Woodstock '99 and at the 2001 Big Day Out festival in Australia.
Lineup changes
Borland left in 2001. The band carried on with guitarist Mike Smith for Results May Vary (2003). Borland returned for The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1) (2005) before a hiatus. They reunited with Borland in 2009, made Gold Cobra (2011), left Interscope and signed with Cash Money. DJ Lethal left and returned in 2018. Still Sucks came out on October 31, 2021.
Recent years
In October 2024 the band sued Universal Music Group, saying it owed them more than $200 million in unpaid royalties. In March 2025 a judge dismissed 14 of their claims but let the federal copyright claim continue.
Their first new song in four years, "Making Love to Morgan Wallen," came out on September 12, 2025, as part of the Battlefield 6 soundtrack.
Founding bassist Sam Rivers died on October 18, 2025.
Where to start
"Break Stuff" for the band at their angriest, "Rollin'" for their biggest moment.
