Watch
Arch Enemy are one of the defining bands of melodic death metal, and they're also a band of reinventions. In 2026 they began another chapter, with a new singer and a new single.
A Swedish supergroup
Arch Enemy formed in Halmstad, Sweden, in 1995, originally as a supergroup. Carcass guitarist Michael Amott founded the band with Johan Liiva, both formerly of the death metal band Carnage. Over the years, members have come from Carcass, Armageddon, Carnage, Mercyful Fate, Spiritual Beggars, The Agonist, Nevermore, Eucharist and Once Human.
The band have released eleven studio albums, three live albums, three video albums and four EPs.
Liiva, Gossow, White-Gluz
Liiva fronted the band until 2000, when German vocalist Angela Gossow replaced him. Her first album with the band was Wages of Sin (2001).
In March 2014 Gossow stepped down to become the band's manager. Her replacement was Canadian vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, formerly of the Agonist. Gossow said she was "passing the torch" to a friend she had always thought deserved her chance. White-Gluz said Wages of Sin was the first metal album she ever bought.
With White-Gluz, Arch Enemy made four studio albums: War Eternal, Will to Power, Deceivers and Blood Dynasty, plus two live albums.
Blood Dynasty
In July 2024 the band released "Dream Stealer" without warning, their first new song since Deceivers in 2022. Blood Dynasty followed on March 28, 2025, and the band toured it across North America in April and May 2025 and Europe in October and November 2025.
A new voice
On November 23, 2025, Arch Enemy announced White-Gluz's departure. On February 19, 2026, they released "To the Last Breath," introducing Lauren Hart, formerly of Once Human, as their new lead vocalist. They are touring in 2026.
White-Gluz, meanwhile, has formed her own band, Blue Medusa.
Where to start
Start with "Nemesis" for the band at full strength, then "To the Last Breath" to hear where they're headed now.
