Watch
Linkin Park were among the biggest rock bands in the world, lost their singer, went quiet for seven years, and came back.
Agoura Hills, 1996
Linkin Park formed in Agoura Hills, California, in 1996. For their first seven albums the lineup included lead vocalist Chester Bennington and drummer Rob Bourdon, alongside Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Joe Hahn and Dave Farrell.
Hybrid Theory and Meteora
Their debut, Hybrid Theory (2000), fused heavy metal and hip-hop and was certified Diamond by the RIAA. "One Step Closer," "Crawling" and "In the End" all charted highly, and "In the End" reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Meteora (2003) continued the run.
Changing shape
Minutes to Midnight (2007) marked a change in sound. A Thousand Suns (2010) leaned into electronics. Living Things (2012) drew on everything before it. The Hunting Party (2014) went heavier, and One More Light (2017) went pop.
Loss and silence
Bennington died by suicide in July 2017. The band went on a seven-year hiatus, during which Bourdon chose to leave.
From Zero
In 2023, out of public view, the band approached Emily Armstrong and Colin Brittain. On September 5, 2024, Linkin Park announced their return, with Armstrong on vocals and Brittain on drums, and released "The Emptiness Machine." From Zero followed on November 15, 2024. Delson stepped back from touring to work behind the scenes.
The choice of Armstrong drew criticism over her connections with the Church of Scientology and her perceived support of Danny Masterson. Armstrong said she hadn't been in contact with Masterson since 2020 and condemned his crimes, but didn't clarify her current status with the church. One of Bennington's sons said the band had "betrayed the trust" of fans.
The band toured arenas in 2024 and stadiums in 2025, including their first show at Wembley. A deluxe edition of From Zero added "Up From the Bottom," "Unshatter" and "Let You Fade" in 2025.
The numbers
Linkin Park have sold more than 100 million records and won two Grammy Awards.
Where to start
