Marvel's put out the full trailer for VisionQuest, its Disney+ series with Paul Bettany as the Vision. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer went up on the Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel on Thursday, 1 October, at 9am Pacific time, which was 1:30am Friday in Adelaide. That's less than two weeks before the eight-episode show starts streaming on 14 October.
Disney+ sent the trailer out with a one-line pitch: "On October 14, experience the final Vision of the groundbreaking trilogy." VisionQuest wraps up the run that started with WandaVision in 2021 and carried on with Agatha All Along in 2024.
What the trailer shows
This one's busier and darker than the first trailer Marvel showed at its D23 fan event in August. It opens with Vision introducing himself, then quickly sets up the problem at the heart of the show. This Vision is a rebuild. "I have his memories, but not his virtue," he says, a line that echoes the D23 footage.
Then there's Ultron. James Spader is back as the artificial intelligence who built Vision's body in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, and now he's living inside Vision's head. The trailer's own captions give Ultron a needling line about "still occupying space in your mind, rent free." TV Insider notes Spader isn't just a voice this time. He shows up in the flesh, as a bearded, bespectacled human avatar inside Vision's mind. Marvel's official synopsis calls him "the infamous Ultron", one of several AI personas built into Vision's programming.
The third thread is a teenager. A young man tells someone off-screen, "I had a family. A mother and a father," and later, "I have these memories. Of someone I'm not." A voice urges Vision to "free me, and save your son." Late in the cut, a voice promises to "finish what I started all those years ago," and someone shouts "Ultron, stop!" The trailer ends on a reminder that "family is forever," plus a short, grim exchange about how to get in somewhere: "Kill them all." "Is that your answer to everything?"
Those lines come from the official English captions on Marvel's upload, which don't say who's speaking.
The story Marvel's selling
Marvel's official synopsis, published by Dark Horizons, fills in the plot. "Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding," it says. "Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron."
That quiet life doesn't last. "His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepherd, a mysterious boy who may be Vision's son, reincarnate," the synopsis goes on. "As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron's influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he's to survive."
If you skipped the earlier shows, that teenager matters. In WandaVision, Wanda Maximoff created twin boys, Tommy and Billy, inside the illusion she built around the town of Westview. Agatha All Along brought Billy back in a new body. VisionQuest looks set to do the same for Tommy. TV Insider reports that Ruaridh Mollica plays him, taking over from Jett Klyne, who played young Tommy in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The bounty brings in someone new. TV Insider reports Todd Stashwick plays Paladin, a masked mercenary from Marvel's comics who first turned up in Daredevil #150 in 1978. Jim Shooter and Carmine Infantino created him, and he's usually more a gun for hire than a classic villain.
The show's name comes from the comics too. TV Insider points out it borrows from John Byrne's 1989 story where government agents kidnap Vision, take him apart and rebuild him in a new, colourless body, without his old memories or feelings. That's pretty close to where the TV Vision was left at the end of WandaVision.
Who's in it and who made it
Marvel's D23 announcement lists the cast as Paul Bettany, James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T'Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer, with Emily Hampshire and James D'Arcy. The synopsis names three more of Vision's inner voices. Dark Horizons lists D'Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S. He played Edwin Jarvis, the human butler the AI was named after, in Marvel's Agent Carter series.
Terry Matalas is the showrunner. He ran the final season of Star Trek: Picard. He's also directing, along with Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro and Vincenzo Natali. Marvel says the writers are Matalas, Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti and Matthew Okumura. TV Insider lists Kevin Feige and Jac Schaeffer, who created WandaVision, among the executive producers.
How Marvel got here
Marvel announced the 14 October premiere in May, at Disney's 2026 Upfronts presentation in New York. "Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran Paul Bettany returns as Vision, the beloved android and Avenger," Marvel's announcement said, and it confirmed Spader was "reprising his role from 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron."
The first trailer and poster came in August, when Bettany and Spader walked out together at D23 to unveil them. Dark Horizons notes several shorter promos have followed since. This week's trailer is the full-length one.
It's part of a busy stretch for Disney+. The service picked up Pixar's Toy Story 5 on 23 September, and dropping a big trailer two weeks out is a familiar studio move, as we looked at in the trailer as news.
When you can watch
VisionQuest starts on Disney+ on Wednesday, 14 October, US time. TV Insider reports the series opens with two episodes. Disney+ is available in Australia, but it hasn't announced a local start time, so check the app closer to the day.
There are eight episodes in all. You don't need to have seen Agatha All Along to follow Vision's side of the story. WandaVision is the one to catch up on, though, because VisionQuest picks up the version of Vision that flew off at the end of it.
The official trailer is on Marvel Entertainment's YouTube channel, and the series page is on Marvel.com.
