If your phone rings with an unknown number and you let it go to voicemail, you're already doing the right thing. But you don't have to do it by hand any more. Both iPhone and Google's Pixel phones can now pick up unknown calls for you and ask the caller who they are and why they're ringing. iPhone then rings and shows you the answer, and a Pixel can hang up on spam by itself. Apple updated its guide to these settings in September, and Google lists Australia as one of the countries where Pixel can screen calls automatically.
