Apple's Surprise and Shine event is on 9 September 2026 at 10 a.m. Pacific, and the big question for Australians is when pre-orders open afterwards. Finder AU and other buying guides expect pre-orders might open on the evening of 11 September, with phones in shops around 18 September if Apple sticks to its usual Friday pattern.
Every hardware rumour here is just that, an expectation. A foldable could run short on supply even if it shows up on stage. Think of this as a shopping calendar for the days after the event.
Start with what's locked in. Surprise and Shine is on Wednesday 9 September 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. For Australian viewers that's 3:00 a.m. AEST on Thursday 10 September. It streams on apple.com, Apple TV and YouTube. Apple's own pages and its late-August invites confirm the time. Which phones come out, and when, is still a guess until the keynote.
Finder AU's tips on pre-orders and sale dates are the backbone of this calendar. It says pre-orders might open on the evening of 11 September. It says phones might go on sale in Australia around 18 September if the usual September Friday pattern repeats. Finder itself calls those expectations. Apple hasn't promised them, and no phone company has announced them.
Be careful with the foldable. Australian guides have warned that Apple's first foldable, widely tipped as a top-end Ultra-style device, could ship later because of supply, even if it's shown on stage. The Pro phones and a foldable going on sale the same Friday is a hope, not a promise. If Apple shows the foldable and gives a later shipping date, that delay becomes the big story on Wednesday night and changes the calendar on Thursday. For now, the delay is only a possibility.
So what do you actually need to know? The event time, where to stream it, the expected pre-order evening, the expected sale Friday, the warning about the foldable, and the software release dates Apple usually gives at the end of the keynote. Camera counts, hinge designs and Australian prices Apple hasn't announced can wait.
If you want the event itself, our countdown has the details, and our foldable preview looks at what Apple might show on stage. This is about what happens after.
Here are the numbers. The event is on 9 September 2026 at 10 a.m. PT, which is 3 a.m. AEST on 10 September. Finder AU expects pre-orders on the evening of 11 September and phones in shops around 18 September. The foldable may come later. You can stream it on apple.com, Apple TV and YouTube. Apple's events pages give the time, Finder AU gives the buying tips, and MacStories, PCMag AU and Mashable covered the rumours in invite week.
You don't need a ticket to watch, and it's still worth watching the night before pre-orders. It's free on Apple's events page, the Apple TV app and YouTube. A replay usually goes up afterwards for anyone who won't get up at 3 a.m. Even if you only care about when to buy, you'll want the shipping-date slides. Phone companies and shops plan around those dates as much as around the phones.
Here's what Australian previews expect, and again, it's all a guess. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are tipped as the main pair. A top-end foldable is tipped too. So is new Apple Watch hardware, and release dates for this year's software updates. AirPods rumours are split. Many roundups say the base iPhone 18, Air and e models will come later. None of it's confirmed until Apple says so on Wednesday.
Australian prices are anyone's guess until Apple announces them, so there are no storage-tier prices or phone plan sums here. Overseas rumoured prices don't tell you what Australians will pay.
Why the evening of 11 September? In recent years Apple has often opened pre-orders on the Friday after a Tuesday or Wednesday keynote, US time. In Australia that turns into a Friday evening online queue, with people refreshing the store. Finder's "evening of 11 September" fits that habit. If Apple breaks the habit, the stores will tell you with push notifications. Trust the stores over any preview.
The sale date around 18 September comes from the same habit. In many past years, phones hit shops about two weeks after keynote week. It's still a pattern, not a confirmed shipment. And even with one national sale date, picking up a phone in a capital city can be different from picking one up at a regional Apple reseller.
Software dates deserve their own line in your calendar. Previews expect Apple to confirm when the next iPhone, iPad and Mac software updates go public. Those dates decide when new features reach the phones you already own, not just the new Pros. Set a second reminder for the end of the keynote.
There are three ways the foldable could go, and all of them are guesses. In the first, it's shown on stage and ships with the Pros around 18 September. In the second, it's shown but ships later. In the third, it's not shown at all. Only Wednesday will settle it.
Ignore trade-in and payment plan deals until Apple actually announces one. Made-up trade-in bonuses are wrong by Thursday. What's useful is three dates, the stream, the pre-order tip and the sale tip, plus a warning about the foldable. Everything else waits for Apple.
Watch your time zone. 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday is 2:30 a.m. ACST on Thursday if you're on Australian Central time. Check Apple's Australian events page for the exact time it lists, and set two alarms. If Finder's right, the pre-order evening on 11 September means evening in your local Australian time zone. Don't refresh at the wrong midnight.
One more tip. If you're buying for a household that shares a plan, watch the software dates and the shipping dates together. A Pro that arrives on the eighteenth won't help if a feature you want reaches existing phones a week later anyway. Check the calendar first, and ignore rumoured prices.
So after Surprise and Shine on 9 September 2026 at 10 a.m. Pacific, Australian guides led by Finder expect pre-orders might open on the evening of 11 September, with phones in shops around 18 September and a foldable that could come later. Apart from Apple's event time, they're all expectations. Watch the stream, then watch the store dates, not the rumoured prices.
