git init and git status

Start a repo and see what changed.

Illustration for Git
Lesson 1 is on the house.

git init creates a new repository with a .git directory that stores history.

git status shows the working tree vs the index vs HEAD — your map of change.

Untracked files are unknown to Git until you add them; modified files already have history.

Run status constantly — it prevents committing the wrong set of files.

Initializing inside an existing repo nests repos by mistake; check before init.

init

git init
git status
Match this when you type.
