Hello, Elixir

iex, IO.puts, .exs scripts.

Illustration for Elixir
Lesson 1 is on the house.

Elixir runs on the BEAM (Erlang VM). The interactive shell is iex. Script files often use the .exs extension; compiled modules use .ex.

IO.puts/1 writes a value to standard output and appends a newline. Strings are UTF-8 binaries; "hello" is a valid string literal.

In iex, expressions are evaluated immediately. You can also run a script with elixir hello.exs from the shell without compiling a Mix project first.

Elixir is case-sensitive. Module names are typically CamelCase atoms under the hood; function and variable names use snake_case.

Misses: writing println (that is Kotlin/Java), using print from Python, or saving a module file as .exs when you meant a compiled .ex module for Mix.
